Ecuador's Supergrains - Farmer and Crop Sustainability

Quinoa

Perhaps the original superfood, this plant protein is endemic of the Andes mountains and hosts a portfolio of nutrients, including protein, fiber, iron, copper, thiamin and vitamin B6.  The Tunkahuan varietal of Quinoa is native of Ecuador, this varietal has less saponin then other Quinoas and is called “sweet quinoa” because it is less bitter.  A mainstay of any gluten free household, we are offering both whole grain and flour for all your culinary needs.  Check out our recipes section for fresh cooking and baking ideas.

Green Plantain

A nutritious meal rich in complex carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.  A good source of antioxidants.

High in Fiber (100grams contain 8% of your daily fiber intake): Apart from helping with bowel movements, fiber increases fullness, slows digestion, and may help manage cholesterol.

Weight Management: Fiber and complex carbs are less processed and more slowly digested than the simple carbs found in processed foods.

Good for your Heart: The high amount of potassium found in plantains is essential for maintaining the cell and body fluids that control your heart rate and blood pressure.

Lupin

Also called chochos, tarwi, or altramuz; this recently “rediscovered” superfood is packed with nutrients.  These legumes contain more plant protein than quinoa, more fiber than oats, more antioxidants than berries, more potassium than bananas and more iron than kale.  However, because they have proteins similar to peanuts or soy, they can be allergenic to some.

Lupin is keto friendly and gluten free.  We have Lupin flour available for your baking needs, this flour has less of a  carbohydrate intake then regular flour.  If you are too busy to bake you can simply add this flour to your favorite smoothie, no cooking required!

Why Wheat Alternatives are Important

Besides an allergic intolerance to Gluten, it is important to include more grain and flour alternatives to your diet.  These alternatives balance out your diet and provide extra nutrients that you may not be getting with a mainstream diet.  It is also very important for the environment to cultivate a variety of crops.  Crop alternatives help to avoid soil nutrient depletion and erosion.  Often times these native alternatives are eradicated for wheat, rice and corn, which interrupts the indigenous ecosystems in these regions.  Demand for wheat alternatives helps your body, mind and the environment.  Go ahead experiment with these alternative flours for your next sweet or salty meal.
